To achieve medical innovation by developing basic research to applied research and to apply it for practical use, it is essential not only to establish the approval and cooperation of the government and business community but also to secure human resources and sufficient funding. Sweden—a country with a robust strategy for developing industrial application and applied research—leads the world in the development of biotechnology clusters and the practical application of research results. Against this background, Sweden has promoted the establishment of a centralized research framework, utilization of an broad scale database, and the development of human resources.
Our project “NanoBio FIRST” is a worldwide leading program in the field of nanobiology research. To apply the results of our research to practical use, it is important to establish a cyclical process of first understanding patients’ requirements such as their clinical and market needs and then promoting the practical application of our research.
The aim of this symposium is to discuss methods of achieving next-generation collaboration between Sweden and Japan toward the realization of this “Bench to Bedside, Bedside to Bench” cycle at an international level.
