Horizon Japan International School Grade 10 students from Yokohama had a researcher experience at iCONM.
On May 21, about 30 students (Grade 10) from Horizon Japan International School in Kanagawa-ku, Yokohama City, visited iCONM for a day of researcher experience. Initially, Makoto Shimazaki, the Communications Manager, explained the overview of iCONM/CHANGE, followed by a presentation on the day's experimental schedule by Sabina Quader, the Deputy Principal Research Scientist. The students were divided into four groups to conduct four types of experiments, including observing cancer cells with a confocal laser microscope and experiencing DNA electrophoresis.
After lunch, Rui Shuhama, Executive Researcher at Dai-ichi Life Research Institute, gave a lecture on career design for global talent based on her extensive overseas experience. This was followed by a talk from Kazunori Kataoka, Center Director of iCONM, on the broader perspective required for researchers.
For the students, many of whom are children of expatriates or returnees, it seems to have been a valuable opportunity to design their future lives.
