    【Information】National Academy of Engineering (NAE) announced newly elected members this year on February 8, and Kazunori Kataoka (Director General of iCONM, Kawasaki Institute of Industrial Promotion, the Research Leader of COINS, Professor Emeritus, The University of Tokyo) was elected as a foreign member (Foreign Member).
    NAE elects engineers who have made remarkable achievements every year, and being elected as a member is considered the highest honor for stakeholders in the United States.
    NAE, together with the American Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Medicine, constitutes the Academies of the United States of America, and is engaged in formulating programs on engineering education and research promotion and in advising the Federal Government.
    The reason for choosing Kataoka Director General is his pioneer research related to the creation of supramolecular nanostructures and their applications to drugs and gene delivery which are closely related to nanomachines, that is the key of realizing "In body hospital" currently being promoted by COINS Research ". Appointment ceremony will be held at the National Academy's Headquarters in Washington DC, USA on October 8 this year. Twenty-seven people from Japan have been elected as foreign members, including Dr. Leona ezaki and Dr. Isamu Akasaki in the past.

This issue was dedicated to Professor Kazunori Kataoka for celebrating his 65th birthday, and highlights his pioneering work in nanomedicine with great contributions in polymer chemistry, supramolecular chemistry, biomaterials, drug and gene delivery. The special issue was edited by Dr. Horacio CABRAL, Dr. Kanjiro MIYATA, and Dr. Kensuke OSADA, who received great edification from Prof. Kazunori Kataoka. All the articles in this issue are free to view online until end of 2017.

    【Press Release】May 16 (Mon.): A joint press conference with The University of Tokyo, iCONM, Tokyo Institute of Technology, National Institutes of Quantum and Radiological Science and COINS was held regarding the research paper published in Nature Nanotechnology titled "A pH-activatable nanoparticle with signal amplification capabilities for non-invasive imaging of tumour malignancy" by Dr. Kazunori Kataoka, Director General, Innovation Center of NanoMedicine (Project Professor, Policy Alternatives Research Institute), Dr. Peng Mi, Senior Research Scientist, Dr. Nobuhiro Nishiyama, Professor, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Dr. Ichio Aoki, Team Leader, National Institutes for Quantum and Radiological Science and Technology.
    They succeeded in developing a “Nanomachine contrast medium” that detects high-grade cancer.

    【Media Coverage】Apr. 14, 2016: Nikkei Biotech ONLINE published an article related to sonodynamic therapy developed by COINS-affiliated institution - Tokyo Women’s Medical University Institute of Advanced BioMedical Engineering and Science - and led by Yoshiro Muragaki, will begin clinical research by year’s end. The title is “Tokyo Women’s Medical University and team develop sonodynamic therapy that incorporates anti-cancer micelle treatment. Physician-led clinical trials targeting pancreatic cancer treatment to begin within 2 years.”
